Friday - Days, Month

FRIDAY - DAYS, MONTH

Today is DAYS, MONTH day. What???? Well I am starting to teach my 3yr old all about the days of the week, and the months of the year.

Today we are talking about what day it is. The easiest way I know to teach this is to associate each day with an activity the child understands. Like for us, Friday is the day we go to our lake house!

Another way I do this is on Monday I explain to her what we will be doing this week - "Monday (today) we are going to your gymnastics class (yeah!).

Wednesday is play date with your friends, but we have to get through Tuesday first. We have Monday, then Tuesday, then we go to friend's house to play - but that is two more sleeps."

Once they can relate to the number of sleeps and the activities they do on particular days we introduce the names of the days. Again, like anything, repetition is the key. The more you say it the quicker they learn it. Have fun!

Thursday - Kindness

THURSDAY - KINDNESS

Today is KINDNESS day.

In our kindness series we concentrate on everyday things we do that are nice or nurturing. So today we are watering our plants. A simple task, but a necessary one. I explain to my 3 yr old the importance of watering our plants regularly - they need the water to survive. Looking after a living things like a plant or a pet helps little ones learn about kindness and responsibility. These things need us to take care of them - our cat, Dixie, needs fresh water and food every day. Our plants need a good watering every week. Our family and friends need love and support, just like we do.

"Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair, but manifestations of strength and resolutions." - Kahlil Gibran

We have the perfect little watering can that I bought from Target, but I'm sure they are easy to find - just get something easy for your little one to handle.

We fill it up about half-full to minimize the spillage!

We give the plants a good long drink of water.

Now we need a refill.

And one more drink for this thirsty plant.

Even simple tasks are fun for little kids and important life lessons! Have fun!

Wednesday - Physical Ability

WEDNESDAY - PHYSICAL ABILITY

Today is PHYSICAL ABILITY day - in other words - PARK DAY!!

Some days you just need to get out of the house and let your kids run out some of that endless energy! It is good for you too - clears the head, breathe in some fresh air and pretty scenery, and you don't have to look at all those dirty dishes and piles of washing!

My 1yr old is not walking yet, but the change of scenery is enjoyable and she loves watching her big sister play. I think all the things she observes is being absorbed into that innocent little mind, then one day it's all going to come out - oh please Lord, be kind to me!!!

Today we have bought the tricycle to the park - my 3 yr old has been trying to peddle this thing forever - maybe today we might see some progress!

We have some really pretty parks in our area - the best way to find parks is to look on your city's website - they usually list them on there. We are kind of doing a "park tour" - trying a new park each week. There are some real gems hidden away where you least expect them!

This one is in Euless (Texas) - McCormick Park - and it has a great pavilion (nice shade for moms to sit) and this awesome playground for the little ones!

My 3yr old also practiced on her tricycle and guess what!! She did it - first time and she was as proud as punch!! That even sidewalk helped, as did the little push I gave her. She is just now strong enough to be able to push the pedals by herself. Pretty cool!

So when the weather is nice, or you just need to get out of the house head to a local park - and have fun!

Tuesday - Painting

TUESDAY - PAINTING

Today is PAINTING day.

My 3yr old woke up and asked to paint - maybe she had a dream about painting, who knows!! The other morning she woke up and started to describe a butterfly she and Grandma saw the other day - all green with purple spots and a red body - wow, what an imagination, and she's only 3! So I thought today she should get to paint her pretty butterfly.

First, I drew out an outline of the butterfly and a couple of flowers. I googled a butterfly image to copy - it doesn't have to be perfect!

Then filled the paint tubs with some colors and away we go!

I think she is doing a great job coloring the objects - this is the first time she has really done this - usually the paint goes everywhere!

OK - the paint did end up going a little crazy - we had to clean her feet, her arms, wash her shirt, and clean her face (which was a very pretty yellow!), but she had fun!

I'm going to do something special with this picture - seeing as though it is so pretty and colorful I want to display it, and this idea is very unique. I found this in a book "Making Crafts from Your Kids' Art" by Valerie Van Arsdale Shrader (Lark Books), that I bought from Half Price Books.

Firstly, we are taking it to Kinkos to get laminated.

Now that it is laminated it is ready to be constructed into a lantern!

We are using:
  • Ruler
  • Pen
  • Craft Knife
  • Eyelet punch and two 3mm eyelets
  • Hammer
  • 5 brass-plated fasteners
  • Wire cutters
  • Craft wire
  • Glass votive candleholder
  • Votive candle or flameless battery-operated candles (we used the battery candle)

To install the fasteners along the side (to connect it into a cylinder) mark a series of evenly spaced dots along the edge about 1/2 inch in from the edge. Cut a slit parallel with the edge of the short side so when you put the fasteners into the slit they fold out the right way (perpendicular to the edge). Do this to both short sides.

Now bring the artwork together, and push the fasteners through each slot to connect the sides.

Once you have the sides fastened, work out where to put the eyelets - one each side to hang the lantern evenly. Mark a spot about 3/8 inch down from the top and then using a craft knife cut a small X at the marks. This is where you'll install the eyelets for the lantern's handles. (I did mine backwards - installed the eyelets first then the side fasteners, but it would have been better doing as I have explained).

Install the eyelets as per the instructions on the packet.

I then wrapped wire around the glass votive candleholder and hung in inside the lantern, securing the wire ends through the eyelets.

I then used some S'getti String to hang the lantern - securing it through the eyelets as well.

And now we have a beautiful lantern to enjoy on these hot summer nights out on our patio (sorry for the blurry photos - this was the best I could do!). Have fun!

Monday - Concentration

MONDAY - CONCENTRATION

Monday is CONCENTRATION day!

Today I have set up a simple card-matching game for my 3yr old. This helps with object recognition, shape matching, and, of, course, concentration.

I think I received these cards free with a Scholastic book, but I'm sure something similar is available to buy at a toy or book store, or they would be very easy to make. Each card has two sides, the left side has a number + another number of objects (e.g. 2 cars + 3 cars = 5 cars). The right side is the total (5 cars). We are not using them today for addition (a little advanced for my 3yr old just yet!), but just as a matching game. Each card has a unique matching shape, so only the correct card will match with one other card.

Firstly, I matched them all up to show my little one how it works and to also make sure we had all matching cards.

Then, I jumbled them all up.

Now, it's her turn to match them.

All matched! What an accomplishment!

My 3yr old had a fun time matching the fish with the fish, the bugs with the bugs, etc, etc and really had to concentrate as there were 2 of each type, each one only matching its unique pair. Getting a child to spend some time at a game is an important skill - it helps their concentration skills and their confidence when they realize they can do it! Have fun!
